What have you done this week to become a great boss?

Today’s blog post, we are handing the reins over to you…we want to hear from you!  Tell us what you have done this week to become a great boss.  If you couldn’t be a good boss this week, let us know what ‘s holding you back…insufficient funds, lack of inspiration, just didn’t feel like it this week.  Let’s have some good discussion to wrap up this work week.  Over to you!

Fall, Fourth Quarter, Football and other F words.

How we handle this season almost always predicts how we will feel in the early part of 2012.

Now come on… it’s not what you’re thinking, but if you laughed or inserted your own commentary beginning with F, that might be some foreshadowing about the upcoming season. The typical fall season is where we fall back (in most states) on our clocks, prepare for anticipated fourth quarter sales and traffic, and try to work in all those fun activities with friends, families, tail gate party goers, and fellow holiday shoppers. See there, fun, fellow, friends, and family…all f words. However, how we handle this season almost always predicts how we will feel in the early part of 2012.

This is not the time to give up on goals until the year resets in January. This is not the time to coast or usually sit back and relax and just watch all the action. This is the time when we gear up, get ready, and go for it. Okay, so those are g words, but how many of them are you putting into place? Read the rest of this entry »

Contagious Customer Service…with a Bully?

Play

Is it time to free that bully up for new opportunities?

This is a longer Monday Moment than usual and actually on a concept we no longer offer in our off the shelf products and trainings, but in honor of the Labor Day Holiday in America, when many are laboring over how to get more customers in the fourth quarter, this message was requested by some of our coaching clients who found they are working with customers who provide 20% of the revenue and 80% of the challenges. Do you have any customers who might fit that mold? If so, this may help. Read the rest of this entry »

That’s my Title and I’m Sticking to It! …and Other Communication Realities.

What does your title say about how you communicate?

When you’re involved in more than one activity, be it civic, volunteer or work related, you may have occasion to get confused. Such was the case the other day when as head of a volunteer committee and a magazine, I got my role confused in a conversation with a writer for the next issue. My comment was “well, wait a minute, at least that’s my title on this call.” Oh, the things that will come out of my mouth. Have you ever felt that way though? It’s a “who am I today” kind of feeling.

When you are a manager, you usually have a title. When you are a leader, you may or may not, but the title you ARE using in that role, whatever it may be, might change how you communicate. If your title is Mom, you’re going to say and think Read the rest of this entry »

Are you Having Culture Shock or a Culture Shift?

Play

Culture Shock is better when marketing a band than a corporate transition

If you feel your culture is about to change in the office, reach for Howard Schultz’s new book Onward as it will impart many a nugget of wisdom and insights on the culture of Starbucks. Also, you can look into books about Zappo’s company culture or Southwest Airlines’ culture or any number of model or exemplary organizations who seem to have gotten it right. The trick is that the right culture is different for each organization and what you want to look for is the time at which your culture might need to shift and how you can take action without sending it into culture shock.

Culture is contagious! I know that surprises you, but then again, shouldn’t it be? Shouldn’t whatever the driving focus of your business, team, department or organization is, be rubbing off on everyone in the organization to such a degree that they live by a common mantra or thought process when working with your customers? Yes, it should, but it’s often more difficult than you might think.

If you are looking at a culture shift in your organization and want to keep it from being a culture shock, be sure to take note of these tips: Read the rest of this entry »

Are You Leading or Leaving? 3 Ways to Know for Sure

Did you know 92% of Burnouts were never lit?

Have you ever heard the phrase “someone quit, but forgot to tell you?” Do you think this ever happens for leaders? Well, of course it does, but how can you be sure you have both feet in the role and not one foot out the door preparing to leave instead of leave? Try these questions and an accurate and sincere assessment of your answers:

Do you feel “Just Done” more often than you’d like?

It’s no news flash that Commander personality preferences lack a great deal of patience when you begin to impede their ability to get things done, but what may be surprising is that the more invested, energized, and interested this same type of person is in the job, the more patient they become with developing others to raise efficiency and productivity of the entire team. Thus, if you find yourself “Just done!” a lot more than you’d like, this could be sign that you’re crispy, truly done, or nearing burn out instead of energized by the possibilities.

Do you day dream about being somewhere else a lot?

Wishing You Had IT…is NOT The Same as Having Confidence

Monica Wofford, CSP, teaches leaders to understand and improve their own leadership confidence in using practice, skills, and desire as their three areas of focus.

What do you wish you had, but perhaps already do.. its all about your contagious confidence beliefs… not your wishes.

This cartoon made me laugh out loud and then it made me think. Do you remember the Wizard of Oz and the wishes of the Tin Man, The Lion, the Scarecrow and Dorothy? Do you remember how deeply they wished they had a brain, a heart, and courage and could get home and how nothing seemed to work to get them those things until they finally believed they already had them? Hmmm…

What you wish for and wish you had is often phrased in your mind as something you DON’T currently have and wish you could get. Let’s take confidence for example, contagious confidence in fact. If you wish you had contagious confidence it is usually at a time when you find you’re lacking in some way and you are focused on how much of it you don’t think you have, but wish you did. That will get you more of what you don’t want in a hurry. And whether you think you have it or think you don’t, both are still contagious.

This cartoon made me laugh out loud and then it made me think. Do you remember Read the rest of this entry »
